A few words about ClownZen

This web site is inspired by a series of recorded conversations I had with Roshi Wendy Egyoku Nakao about parallels between Clown and Zen, aspects of Being that are vital to the art of Clowning and to the practice of Zen Buddhism. You will find these conversations are in the zen wise section of this site

On the clown wise page, you will find conversations on clowning with performers with whom I have crossed paths repeatedly over the past 30 years.

About Moshe

Moshe's first brush with Zen came as Roshi Bernie Glassman's clown teacher. They later started teaching "Clowning your Zen" workshops together. Moshe teaches in numerous Zen Centers in Europe and the United States. In 2003, with Bernie Boobysatva Glassman, and Peter Kuku Cunningham, Moshe YooWho Cohen founded the Order of Disorder. Occasionally there are OD trainings, which involve public actions of levity.

A few more words about ClownZen Update April 12, 2010.

The work was fascinating, wonderous, light, funnym very present and alive. Lots of laughter and joy opening to the Mu.
I am pretty sure that this is the first exploration of this kind in koan study. Here are a few comments from participants:

The first two 3-some relational exercises
were exquisitely luminous

sore stomach muscles from all the laughter

I loved the definition of "levity" as a lightness and a letting-in of light. Humor is always a possibility, but not an imperative. So freeing.

PS. Using the term 'clownzen' is hopefully not jut another cheap appropriation of the word 'zen'. The other day in Amsterdam, I saw a brand of 'zen mints'. Today (08.08.08), I saw an Africa beauty parlor (in Brussels) called 'Nyanga Zen by K
